Teaching Practice

Updated: Oct 1, 2018

After observing how Physics teacher conducts the learning process, the second week was the time for me to begin the teaching practice.

Students from different groups were solving the problems on the board.

PROCEDURES OF TEACHING

Based on the lesson plan that already approved by cooperating teacher, it will become a guide to conduct the learning process in classroom. The activities in lesson plan generally divided into 3, such as :

1. Opening Activity / Motivational Activity

  • Greetings and opening prayer.

  • Reviewing the last topic related to the topic that will be learned.

  • Showing the learning objectives that will be achieved in the current meeting.

2. Main Activity

  • Presenting and discussing the topic based on the objectives that will be achieved using the learning model and methods that already prepared.

  • Giving sample problems and/or the applications related to the topic.

  • Giving conclusions about the topic.

  • Evaluating students’ understanding about the topic that already discussed.

3. Closing Activity

  • Informing students about the next topic that will be discussed on the next meeting.

  • Greeting and closing prayer.

TIME MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZING ACTIVITIES

Time management in classroom is one of the important things to be concerned, especially in FEU High School which is every subject only takes 75 minutes. Therefore, to make sure all the learning objectives can be achieved, teacher needs a skill to manage time and organize the activities in classroom. In making lesson plan, teacher has to determine the time allocation for every activity, for example ; giving 10 minutes only for opening activity, 60 minutes for the main activity, and 5 minutes for the closing activity. In this part, teacher’s skill on how to manage students is very important. Teacher has to be smart to control the lesson flow and students’ activities. Teacher should follow the time allocation that already planned, but for some reasons if it looks like time doesn’t permit to finish all the subjects, sometimes teacher should skip some unimportant activities which are not really needed in achieving the learning objectives.

PROBLEM SOLVING

After presenting and discussing the topic, teacher gives some sample problems that are related to it. Then, teacher gives students some problems to be solved by themselves. If there is a confusion, teacher will guide students to find the way to solve the problems.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

In achieving the learning objectives, the effectiveness of the learning process is important. Most of the class in FEU High School consist of 35 – 40 students, that’s why classroom management skill of teacher is really needed. Although there are many students in classroom, teacher has to make sure that the learning process reach to all the students in classroom. Every teacher has rules and strategies for their class.

These are some examples of class management that can be used to manage the class and keep students’ attention :

  1. When teacher gives a question to students and asks them to give answers. They have to raise their hand and stand up in order to give the answer, so that the class will keep quite and keep attention to student who gives the answer;

  2. speak only when students are quiet and ready so they can understand what teacher is talking about. If it tooks longer, teacher has to make them keep quiet by using a semi-shouting voice to get the students’ attention back;

  3. use hand signals and other non-verbal communication is one of the way to get students’ attention. Holding one hand in the air and making eye contact with students is a great way to quiet the class. Another example of non-verbal communication is by clapping hands when the class become noisy;

  4. students are given a chance to get their own comfortable position in learning (as long as it is still in well mannered position), yet teacher takes a role in guiding and giving them directions on what activities they should do (making a group, solving a problem, doing the demonstration, etc);

  5. teacher always gives students limitation of time in order to do something, such as in solving problems, doing a demonstration, or making a group, so that even students enjoy the activities, but they still realize that there’s a rule that limit them, then they can use the time effectively.
